Moving Tips

Cast off your clutter
As soon as you know you are moving, think about getting rid of some of the items you've hoarded over time. You'll spend enough time packing the things you really want to take with you, so why spend time packing junk? A new start is a great time to de-clutter your life - and there will be less to unpack at the other end too.

Moving Tips

Think inside the box
Check your loft or attic for any forgotten or old boxes that you can use for packing things up - you'd be surprised how many computer and other boxes you've accumulated over the years! You can also use your time in the loft or attic to clear out any old clutter and to make sure you don't leave behind any treasures you've stored and forgotten about.

A room of one's own
If you're lucky enough to have a spare room that doesn't have a lot of furniture in it, earmark it as your own 'store-room' for any stuff you don't use regularly, and that you can get boxed up ahead of time. If such a room isn't available, look for other spaces where you can conveniently store boxes, i.e. the garage, etc

Yesterday's news
Start saving newspapers well in advance. You can wrap your breakables up adequately with newspaper and without resorting to expensive purchases like rolls of bubble wrap. Newspaper can also be used for filling in any gaps between items in boxes to prevent any rattling around when being moved and providing extra padding against bumps and bashes.

Sealed with a prayer?
Don't over-stuff boxes. Make sure you inspect the bottom of each box to be certain that they're fairly sound and seal them up with some packing tape for extra security. Once you've sealed each box, make a note of its contents on the outside and which room/area it's destined for. That way your unpacking at the other end will be a lot simpler.

Last in, first out
After the stress of moving, you won't want to start hunting around for things you need right away. Set aside a 'first day' bag to keep all the things you will need to have to hand for the first 24 hours and put off tackling any unpacking until the next day. Don't forget items such as a notebook and pen, mobile phone, wallet etc.

Cancel the milk!
Make a list of all the things you need to cancel well in advance of your move, and check any contracts you have with TV subscription companies or broadband providers in case of penalties. Some providers may offer a seamless move where your services can be switched off at your old place and on at your new place on the same day.

Access all areas
Keep all corridors, hallways and doorways clear - in particular, look out for anything that gets spilled, or for small bits of plastic bubble wrap that can be slippery, and clean them up immediately. The last thing you or your removal company want are accidents and injuries that can be easily avoided.

Spread the word
You probably won't want to host an 'I'm moving!' party, but don't forget to inform neighbours of your move, and include businesses operating in close proximity to you also. People don't take kindly to having their regular routine disrupted, but will be glad of the chance to make alternate plans for their day, and the potential backlash is a hassle you can do without.
